Accelerated College Writing
SpringSemester, 2015
Mrs. Frey ([email protected])
Room 221
Grading Policy:
60%= Summative Assessments (writing assignments)
10%= Formative Assessments (grammar quizzes)
30%= Habits of Mind (behaviors, homework, responsibility, on task work, etc.)
Expectations:
You will have little homework; thus, the time in class MUST be spent working diligently. NO cell phones, texting, twittering, emailing, etc. The first time I discover this infraction, you will receive a warning. Subsequent infractions will require one hour after school detention and mandatory lowering of your Habits of Mind grade for the quarter. I collect “data” from my observations of your class behavior and determine your quarter HOM (Habits of Mind) grade based on those observations. You will also have some limited input about your Habits of Mind grade.
When you need a break from writing, you might choose to work on some grammar or some vocabulary work. As long as you meet any deadlines, your time is yours to manage; but you must be working on class assignments during class time.
Writing:
The class is run like a workshop; writing is always being revised. Most of your writing will be done in class; however, you may work on it at home as well. You can expect to spend the most class time revising your written words, being sensitive to my feedback on your paper. For every assignment, you will have a rubric ahead of time. When introducing a new assignment, we will look at models of the assignments together and discuss the writer’s techniques and my requirements on the rubric.
You may REVISE however many times you and I determine you need. We will be collaborating on every piece of writing. Sometimes, you’ll need 4 revisions; sometimes, you’ll need 7. The essay will only be submitted for a “grade” when we both agree the piece is done. You can expect to be assigned a new paper approximately every 3 weeks. If you’re current assignment is not completed, keep revising but begin the next, or else you’ll fall seriously behind.
Vocabulary:
You will be expected to complete 10 vocabulary lessons of your choosing during the semester. Please see the attachment which has a complete description of the requirement.
Homework:
Occasionally, you will be assigned vocabulary work or grammar work to ensure your understanding of a skill we reviewed or I taught in class that day.
Requirements:
Bring your head phones (ear-buds) to class if you’ll be listening to music. Do not ask to go to the library to obtain a school set. Come prepared with your own or use the blue ones in the lab.
I can be reached at my email address: [email protected] every day. I check emails regularly throughout the day. However, I generally leave school between 4-5pm, and I rarely open my emails once I’m home. I also utilize an informative web page www.crhsfrey.weebly.com that students may access for assignments including homework. Students can also access this web page through the school website. Also helpful is the English Department website www.crhsenglish.weebly.com.
